Many cities have hospitals that are considered burn centers. These are not ordinary hospitals but are actually specially accredited centers that have met rigorous standards in order to be called a burn center.

Burn centers, to become a burn center, must undergo an extensive burn program which is designed to check a burn center’s patient resources for treatment, rehabilitation, and staff. The program is to verify a burn center’s resources. Certification as a burn center is an indication to numerous groups that the hospital’s center provides high quality patient care for burn victims, regardless of the severity of their injury. The accreditation is done by the American Burn Association.

There have been many innovations in the treatment of serious burns since the early 1970s. These innovations have all greatly improved the chances of survival and the quality of life for burn patients. There are not more than 100 specialized burn centers in the United States.

Burn centers treat an average of 200 burn patients a year. While this may not seem like a lot, the average hospital will treat, on average, less than 5 burn victims every year.
