Burn Injuries and Children

Burn injuries kill more than 600 children every year under the age of 14. In addition, 3,400 children are injured every year. Of those, 50% are under the age of 5. To prevent future incidents and to help parents, Shriners Hospitals for Children and Shriners of North America recommend the following tips to prepare for, to prevent,, and to respond to burn injuries at home.

Prevention

It is recommended that matches and lighters be kept away from children at all times. In addition, it is a good idea to limit children’s access to stoves, grills, and other household appliances that get hot. This includes never leaving a cooking appliance unattended. Extra care should be taken whenever oil is being used to cook food.

In addition, gasoline should never be kept in the home. It should be kept outside in a well-ventilated area that is also away from any source of ignition.

Preparation

As accidents do sometimes happen, it is important to be prepared for a fire or burn. This starts with installing smoke detectors in every level of the home. They should be present particularly on the ceiling just outside of bedrooms. Having smoke detectors is not enough. The batteries in smoke detectors should be checked every month and replaced every year.

Another way of preparing for a fire is by creating and practicing an escape plan. Any escape plan should ensure that each room has a minimum of two ways out. Also, any escape routes should be kept clutter free.

If the burn does not involve a large fire, a first aid kit should always be handy.

Response

Any good response involves identifying whether a burn is thermal, chemical, or electrical. This is important because these three burn types have very different medical responses. The best thing to do is to request help immediately.
